Skype interviews, smartwatches, startups & more!
We’re live at SoundCloud headquarters for a special episode all about technology. Helping us ‘pivot’ into this theme we’re joined by stand up comedian (and web developer) Caroline Clifford, Head of New Markets at Soundcloud Thom Cummings, and musical guest Gillian Grassie. We bite the hand that feeds us by making fun of Berlin-based start ups, take apart some lame crowdfunding projects, re-enact Noah’s job interview at SoundCloud, discuss Berlin’s ‘nicest’ u-bahn stations, explore Bill Gates’ real name, and try to figure out why someone would make fake dog balls. Plus, “nere”: the live streaming, proximity-based social network in a smart watch. And Gillian Grassie wows us once again with her amazing voice and equally amazing harp!
We now have merch! You can get a snazzy t-shirt or tote bag with our faces on it and support the show with your purchase! The perfect gift for yourself or a loved one (or an enemy?): http://piffle.tictail.com
And, of course, piffle! is on iTunes! Please subscribe and leave us a rating and/or review!
Gillian Grassie travels the world with her harp on her back and her heart on her sleeve. She has won over critics and audiences in 14 countries by striking a delicate balance between innovation and accessibility. Gillian has played everywhere from The NY Times Center in New York City to a moving train car in India. Her shows have been described as “an awesome combination of Pippi Longstocking, drinking buddy, and the Mata Hari.” A Philadelphia native, Gillian currently hangs her hat in Berlin.
Caroline Clifford is a Briton, a stand up comedian and a self-professed nerd. She was a finalist in the “So You Think You’re Funny” and “Amused Moose” comedy competitions and was once in the same room as Keanu Reeves. She has also been a member of many bands, including “Deletia” which was featured on Radio 1 in the UK. Nowadays you’ll find her co-hosting the enormously popular weekly comedy show “We Are Not Gemüsed” here in Berlin.
Thom Cummings is the Head of New Markets here at SoundCloud, where he works on international expansion. Having joined SoundCloud in 2010, Thom has helped grow the company from hundreds of thousands of users to hundreds of millions. Thom has also worked for numerous other startups in the UK and Europe, and is a mentor and presenter at startup events throughout the Continent.
